Description :

Drawing in pencil on paper of the Luilyl homestead near the Bluff at Victor Harbor. This item B 63457/1/1 originates from one of two small sketchbooks (B 63457/1 and B 63457/2) of 16 accomplished drawings comprising a total of approximately 15 complete sketches and 5 preliminary drawings in pencil on paper and including two watercolour drawings of landscapes, farmhouses, cottages, lakes, and coastal views in South Australia, attributed to Mrs. J. M. Whitfield. Some of the items have been titled (B 63457/1) 'On Lake Alexandrina, Pomonda in the distance', Wellington Lodge, from the east', 'Luilyl' and (B 63457/2) 'The Hermitage', 'Lake Amy', 'Sudings Hut at Lake Robe'. Illustrations include recognisable landmarks like the Bluff at Victor Harbor.

Mrs J.M. Whitfield possibly may have been the widow of Mr, James Arthur Whitfield, who died in Adelaide 1873. He left behind a widow and a son, possibly Mrs. Whitfield. A boy featured in many of her sketches.

Victor Harbor had been proclaimed a port in 1838, with the hope that it might also become the capital of South Australia. This hope was in vain and for many years Victor Harbor languished as a small port. Goods were transported by small craft which either beached at low tide or used a small jetty under the Bluff. For more information about Victor Harbor, see SA Memory, Wooden walls and iron sides, Developing trade and port histories: Outports - Victor Harbor.
