Port Augusta : Leisure and tourism

Port Augusta has a history of reinventing itself: from being at one time South Australia's second largest port to a major railway hub. Today, Port Augusta is a prosperous and interesting rural centre, which has again reinvented itself as the capital of the outback; as the starting point for tourists and travellers heading for Eyre Peninsula, Western Australia, Alice Springs and beyond, the Northern Flinders Ranges and the Birdsville Track.

However, tourism in Port Augusta is not a new thing. Just over 50 years ago, Port Augusta was on the itinerary for the Adelaide Steamship Company's 'Gulf Trip' and in the 1950s featured on the itinerary of coach tours. Now eco cruises can take visitors to the utmost limit of the Gulf.
