1861

  • South Australian Gas Company Act, 1861 was an Act to regulate the supply of gas and to make provision for safety and technical standards for gas appliances and installations (taken over in 1924).
  • May: Copper found at Moonta-Moonterra; Moonta Mine established. Wallaroo-Moonta mines attract numerous Cornish and Welsh miners; Kadina-Wallaroo-Moonta area becomes known as 'Little Cornwall'.
  • Municipal Corporations Act allows South Australian women to vote in local government elections; an Australian first.
  • South Australia's western boundary moved from 132º E meridian to the Western Australian boundary of 129º E.
  • Protector of Aborigines office reinstated.
