Description :
Hare Krishna teaching has its roots in 5,000 years of Indian Vedic teaching, but the movement was officially established in 1966 in the US, when the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) was founded. It has become the best known expression of Hinduism in western society. Hare Krishna adherents began meeting in Adelaide in the 1970s, opening a vegetarian restaurant and temple in Frome Road. This later became Govinda's Restaurant in Hindley Street, and a temple was opened in Kilburn. Later 11,000 hectares were bought at Renmark to establish a community farm. The distinctive saffron robes, hand bells and chanting of followers became a feature of Rundle Mall in these years. However, in 1981 the hourly processions were curtailed due to disturbance to shoppers and an incident during the John Martin's Christmas Pageant.
