Description :

Dead feral pig (Sus scrofa) at Flinders Chase Reserve, Kangaroo Island.

Feral pigs can be found in the far north-east of the State along the water courses and water holes of the Innamincka Regional Reserve, Warburton Creek and Diamantina River. These populations are ephemeral and recede during periods of drought when little permanent water is available. They can also be found along the upper reaches of the River Murray from Renmark to the State border and on the western end of Kangaroo Island. The densities of feral pig populations in the State are unknown. The population on Kangaroo Island is said to descend from pigs left by French sailors on Baudin's expedition of 1802 as a food source for shipwrecked sailors.
