Close view of an echidna. Echidnas are monotremes, or egg-laying mammals and together with the platypus are the only animals in this class. Its preferred food is termites and it uses its long snout and sticky tongue to capture the ants and termites that it has dislodged from rotting branches and leaf litter using its strong legs and claws. Adult echidnas have no significant predators and so are common throughout Australia. Rather than fighting a predator it curls into a tight defensive ball armoured with its long spines. |
