Description :

An ornithologist examines a Glossy Black Cockatoo's nest. The Glossy Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami) is found from central-eastern Queensland to eastern Victoria with a sub species (Calyptorhynchus lathami halmaturinus) only found in South Australia on Kangaroo Island. This sub species is listed as endangered.

Prior to the implementation of a recovery project in 1995 the population on Kangaroo Island was estimated to be 200 individuals and declining. Since then this downward trend has been reversed with a minimum 300 birds in 2005. The increase in population size has most likely resulted from increased nesting success due to protection of nest trees from possums and to the provision of around 80 artificial hollows.
