Description :

Low river at Moorook in 1915, showing a wide stretch of dry river bed with pools, showing some snags and tree roots exposed.

Regulation of the River Murray flows with the building of the weirs and locks was brought about by the River Murray Waters Agreement which was signed by all the relevant states in 1915. Construction of the first lock at Blanchetown began later that year. The locks were intended to even out river flows for irrigation and for steam navigation on the river; however there have still been major floods in the river, notably in 1931 and 1956. Drought continues to effect the river system, but it is not revealed to this dramatic extent.
