Description :

Poster publicising National Aborigines Day on Friday 11th July 1958. At the time the policy of 'assimilation' into white culture of Aboriginal people which this poster advocates was government policy. In 1996, Michael Dodson, described 'assimilation' as "Assimilation was then, just as it is now, about what whitefellas want. What they want first for themselves, and second, what they want for us."

The photo on the poster was taken at Warrabri Baptist Mission Station in the Northern Territory.
