Description :

Interior view of a third class passenger cabin on the S.S.'Euripides' furnished with four bunks either side of the small room and a wash hand basin; a reflection in a mirror records the camera as it takes the view through an open door.

One of the bunks is fitted with a blanket showing the Aberdeen Line's house flag of the white star on a red background. This design was later taken over by the White Star Line, as part of an involved series of mergers in the 19th century.

Euripides was an Aberdeen White Star liner of 15,300 tons, built by Harland and Wolff, Belfast. In 1914, possibly after the voyage on which this photo was taken, it was one of 28 vessels requisitioned by the Australian government and fitted out as a troop ship. It was equipped to carry 136 officers, 2204 other ranks and provided stabling for 20 horses. Following the war Euripides was returned to civilian service, and in 1932 was acquired by the Shaw Savill & Albion Line and renamed Akaroa. The ship was finally scrapped in 1954.
