Resin plaque for HMAS Parramatta. The second of four Navy ships bearing that name, the Parramatta was built at Cockatoo Island Dockyards in Sydney and commissioned in 1939. The badge uses, in part, the Arms of the City of Parramatta in New South Wales, with an Aboriginal man spearing a fish. Jefferson Hirst Walker was born at Hawthorn, Victoria, on 16 July 1901. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on 31 December 1913, rising to the rank of Commander. He was in command of HMAS Parramatta when the vessel was torpedoed and sunk whilst ferrying supplies to Australian troops at Tobruk on 28 November 1941. Commander Walker was amongst the 146 men lost. |
