Description :
This limited edition poster (number 350 of 1,000) was produced by State Opera of South Australia to publicise Der Ring des Nibelungen, staged at Adelaide Festival Centre from 16 November to 12 December 2004. This was the first all-Australian production of Richard Wagner's monumental work - the 1998 production of The Ring was created for Paris' Thé tre du Ch telet and restaged in Adelaide with a new cast.

The four opera epic consists of a prologue or preliminary evening Das Rheingold (The Rhinegold), followed by three 'days': Die Walkure (The Valkyrie), Siegfried and Die Gotterdammerung (The Twilight of the Gods). Inspired by diverse sources including Greek tragedy and Germanic and Norse mythology, The Ring was first performed in August 1876 at Wagner's purpose-built Festspielhausin Bayreuth, Germany, and was attended by luminaries from all over Europe. The month-long Richard Wagner Festival, commonly known as Bayreuth Festival, is held each July at the Festspielhaus and attracts thousands of attendees to sold-out performances.

Presenting the vast and intricate cycle in its entirety, State Opera of South Australia staged the largest production in Australian theatrical history.
