Description : |
The Humpty Dumpty float. When Edward Hayward planned the first Adelaide Christmas pageant in 1933, he conceived of a procession that would bring fairy tales and nursery rhymes to life for the children of Adelaide. The 1949 pageant featured nine floats, 24 wheeled sets and a total of 950 participants. Seen here is a wheeled set with Humpty Dumpty perched precariously atop his wall. Whilst several other story book characters featured that year, the 1949 pageant was also full of characters from the world of radio, cinema and comics, such as Ginger Meggs, Tom and Jerry, the Wizard of Oz and Donald Duck. Fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters have continued their prominence throughout the years and many are still part of the pageant today, such as Puss in boots, Cinderella, the Hare and the tortoise and the Three little pigs. |
