Description : |
The John Martin's Christmas Pageant : Father Christmas on his sleigh. Father Christmas has been the star attraction of the Adelaide Christmas pageant since it commenced in 1933 - indeed the purpose of the pageant is to welcome him to Adelaide and deliver him safely to his home at the 'Magic Cave'. In the weeks leading up to the first pageant, advertisements kept children informed of Father Christmas' progress as he flew from the North Pole to Adelaide. Upon arriving in Adelaide he flew around the suburbs with a loud speaker inviting everyone to come see the pageant, and welcome him to town. This photograph of Father Christmas travelling up King William Street to the 'Magic Cave' was taken during the 1986 Christmas pageant, South Australia's sesquicentenary year. The streets are lined with South Australian Jubilee 150 flags and the pageant that year had a sesquicentenary flavour including four specially themed floats - Proclamation tree and guard, HMS Buffalo, Bound for South Australia and Cobb and Co. |
