Description : |
A record-breaking crowd of approximately 200,000 attended this pageant held on Saturday 5 November 1950. It was 'a crowd such as Adelaide had rarely known before. Chairs, ladders, car roofs, trees, boxes - and anything else that gave spectators the advantage of a few extra inches - were pressed in service' (The Advertiser, 6 November 1950, p. 5). The pageant was made extra special for several of Adelaide's disadvantaged children. For the first time children from orphanages, missions and children's homes (about 800 in total) received VIP treatment, some riding on a bus as part of the procession, others occupying the balconies of Adelaide City Council offices and business premises along the route. This footage is from one of more than 200 segments of film held at the State Library taken by Percival Moody. Born at Kent Town in 1890, Moody was a philanthropist, company director and keen motor hobbyist, founding the Harley-Davidson Motor Cycle Club and the Outboard Club of South Australia. Moody filmed historic South Australian events, occasions and attractions between 1929-1950, and raised funds for charity through public film screenings. |
