Description : |
A page from the handwritten diary of Frances Taylor (nee Harvie) which records her activities on 1 January 1945 whilst she was working for the Land Army at Lucindale. The Australian Women's Land Army was formed during the Second World War to combat rising labour shortages in the farming sector. Recruits had to be between 18 and 50 years of age and to be British subjects or immigrants from Allied nations. The Women's Land Army needed to be heavily promoted in rural areas and to primary producers, who were initially resistant to female labour. Sceptical attitudes, however, generally came to be characterised by praise and respect after farmers gained experience in working with AWLA women. [Australian War Memorial: Australian Women's Land Army] Enrolment numbers peaked in December 1943, with 2,382 permanent members and 1,039 auxiliary members. |
