Map of sections 3498, 3499 and 3500 at Jupiter Creek, the property of the South Australian Company in the Onkaparinga Special Survey area. The course of the Onkaparinga River is shown, with the road from Adelaide crossing it at 'Warlands'. At another road intersection is written 'Present Diggings 19 miles from Adelaide'. Areas of 'Stringy Bark and Quartz' indicated. Ink and watercolour on paper, ink notation. No scale given. Stamped with date 12.1.[18]53; handwritten signature 'A.W. Adelaide 2 Oct.r/52' at bottom right hand corner. (Original mounted on same sheet as maps 23 & 24) Settlement took place in the area around Echunga from 1839, with the town being laid out in 1849. In 1852 gold was discovered; Echunga became the first proclaimed goldfield in South Australia. The following gold rush lasted less than a year before the diggings were abandoned. Later discoveries in 1853 and 1854 led to equally short-lived rushes. In 1868 gold was discovered at nearby Jupiter Creek. This proved to be a much larger and long-lived field. The South Australian Company was formed in London on 9 October 1835 by George Fife Angas, an influential merchant and philanthropist and a member of the Board of Commissioners responsible for establishing the new colony of South Australia. The Company formed for the immediate purpose of encouraging the preliminary purchase of land based on the South Australian Act. |
