A view of a jetty in Port Augusta jetty, 1889.

Port Augusta's first jetty was contructed by Elders in 1855 which underwent improvement in 1856 and 1857. A second jetty was constructed by Thomas Burgoyne in 1856. In 1863 the Yudnamutana jetty was built (by the Yudnamutana mining company). In 1875 Thomas Young (of Bignell and Young) built a wool store and jetty.

With the need to build infrastucture to support the railway the government built a jetty in 1877 which ran a tramway along the jetty and up the main street to serve the stores located along there. It was the longest in the port being 155 metres long and 7 metres wide.

Over time various other small jetties were built. However with the boom in shipping during the 1880s the government held an enquiry into wharves and jetties in 1881. The result of this enquiry was that deeper berthage was required to keep up with the shipping demand. As part of this devlopment 5 old jetties were buried in 1885 and a new wharf opened in 1886.
