Description : |
Two young women tying up their boat at Port Vincent jetty, South Australia. The building in the background is the Ventnor Hotel, which is still there Sailing in the sheltered bay at Port Vincent was a popular activity but the first sailing club was not formed until the summer of 1934-35. A private jetty was erected at Port Vincent in 1877 and the steamer Star of Hope disembarked the first passengers and cargo on 30 June of that year. After 1909 however the jetty was no longer greatly used being gradually replaced by the 300 feet of wharf that was built along the foreshore. It is this wharf the boat is being tied up at. The Ventnor Hotel behind is the oldest building in Port Vincent and was erected in 1877 as the Port Vincent Hotel. It stands on Allotment 1. |
