Detail of a 'German' house at Paechtown in the Adelaide Hills. Traditional construction methods shown are the high pitched roof and the half timber construction, known as 'Fachwerk'. The timber beams were customarily joined using wooden pegs rather than metal nails. Oak was traditionally used in Europe, but in Australia, the beams were usually red gum. The in-fill in this building is brick, but wattle and daub was also commonly used. |
