Description : |
View of the Murray River flag, suspended from the ceiling of the Signal Point cafe at Goolwa. Two versions of the Murray River flag are used today, the Upper Murray River flag and the Lower Murray River flag. The Lower Murray River flag is pictured here, featuring pale blue horizontal stripes representing the blue grey waters of the Lower Murray. The Upper Murray River Flag has dark blue bars signifying the darker waters of the upper reaches. Just when the River Murray flag come into existence is unclear, but its association with Goolwa is a long one - it was hoisted at the town in 1853 on the arrival of the Mary Ann, one of the first paddle steamers on the River Murray. |
