Description : |
The 'Father Christmas' float in the 1957 Christmas Pageant. Adelaide's Christmas Pageant was started by Edward Heyward, chairman of John Martin and Co., in 1933. Heyward's idea was that clowns, bands and characters from fairy tales would accompany Father Christmas to his Adelaide residence in the Magic Cave at John Martins department store. The procession winds through Adelaide's streets with Father Christmas at the rear and his arrival at the Magic Cave marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. |
