Just for fun

What constitutes play and fun? So much of what children do in their 'free' time away from school and lessons, household chores, and sporting activities is in fact a learning activity - a preparation, if you like, for adulthood. It is easy enough to distinguish between the intent of an early 19th century geographical boardgame which eases the learning of world geography, from the pure fun and chance of a modern version of Snakes and Ladders. We can distinguish between reading about or viewing on television natural history from reading the latest JK Rowling or Andy Griffiths story. But how to differentiate between the young girl playing with her dolls, dressing them and brushing their hair, from the young teenager reading the latest fashion tips in the current magazine? Child and teenager are both preparing for adulthood, learning, if you like, but for them it is pleasure.
