Description : |
Steamships Time and Warooka loading salt at the Edithburgh jetty. The Warooka is left of picture. In the Edithburgh-Yorketown region there are over 100 salt lakes and the scraping, refining and shipping of salt became an integral part of life in Edithburgh. The Castle Salt Cooperative Company opened the first refinery in the town in 1899. By the turn of the 20th century over 40,000 tonnes of refined salt was being produced. Other companies, such as the Colonial Salt Company and the Standard Salt Company, were also established. During the Great Depression of the 1930s trade in Edithburgh suffered and the three salt companies amalgamated under the name of the Australian Salt Company. Slowly the salt trade diminished until the factory closed in 1970. The jetty was closed to trade in 1973. The Time, of 2,575 tons gross, later foundered between Nora Creina Bay and Beachport on 13 January 1911. The postcard has 'Auntie Agnes' written in the right margin. |
