Description :

It was regular procedure for an expedition to send out a party on a different route and to rejoin the main expedition at an arranged location. Charles Wells, the cousin of leader Lawrence Wells, and George Jones left the main party at Separation Well, intending to meet with the main party of the Calvert Scientific Expedition at Joanna Spring. By separating in this way an expedition could explore more of the country. Lawrence Wells had done it frequently on an earlier expedition with great success, and saw no problems for his cousin and Jones on this occasion. In his diary entry for 11 October 1896 Lawrence Wells records the arrangements.

The Calvert Scientific Exploring Expedition was financed by Albert Calvert, and managed from Adelaide by the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (South Australian Branch). It had set out from Lake Way, near Wiluna in Western Australia in June 1896. Its purpose was to explore the remaining unknown desert regions of Western Australia and it was hoped they would find mineral resources or pastoral lands. The expedition was equipped with camels and was led by Lawrence Wells, an experienced surveyor and bushman. Wells had taken over command of the Elder Exploring Expedition from David Lindsay.
