Description : |
In his diary entry for 11 October 1896 Lawrence Wells refers to the difficulties in locating good camel feed. The lack of water, coupled with the continuing poor supplies of plants suitable for the camels hampered the Calvert Scientific Expedition throughout its course. Wells was continually moving ahead of the main party searching for water and forage, however this did little to help the deteriorating strength of the camels. The Calvert Scientific Expedition had set out from Mullewa in June 1896. Financed by Albert Calvert a London mining engineer its purpose was to explore the unknown central Western Australian region. Larry Wells was a South Australian surveyor and experienced bushman who had previously been surveyor on the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition 1891-92, and subsequently taken over the command of that expedition from David Lindsay. It had been originally conceived that the Elder Expedition would explore those regions that the Calvert Expedition was now exploring. |
