Description : |
The camels were severely effected by the lack of water and poor feed available. The health of the camels was crucial to the expedition. One camel had died on 26 October and the following day, 27 October 1896, Lawrence Wells recorded in his diary that another six were ill unable even to chew their cud. The camels were losing condition rapidly, and the Calvert Expedition was now travelling at night in the cooler conditions, camping mid-morning and resting during the heat of the day. The camels huddled together standing in each other's shadow, and even on occasion trying to get in under the tent fly out of the heat. Larry Wells abandoned more equipment, with the sickest camels carrying nothing at all, in an endeavour to save them. He was also now concerned about his cousin Charles Wells and George Jones. |
