Description : |
In his diary entry for 30 October 1896 Larry Wells recorded that he had sighted a smoke signal to the east and hoping it might be his cousin Charles Wells and George Jones, set out to walk to it. With only a half pint of cold tea to sustain him, he walked 12 miles in four hours and had still not reached the smoke. Considering now that it was probably the fire of some Aboriginal people he returned to the camp. Charles Wells and George Jones had separated from the main expedition on 11 October to undertake a side trip and explore additional country. It had been arranged for them to rejoin the main party at Joanna Spring. Lawrence Wells had calculated that his party should reach Joanna Spring in about 12 days from the 11 October and his cousin Charles and George Jones in about 14 days. By now it was well past the expected dates and Joanna Spring had still not been located. Lawrence Wells was becoming extremely anxious about the safety of both parties. |
