Description : |
Soon after Adelaide was founded a small group of Lutherans under Pastor Klose and Pastor Teichelmann formed a congregation and in 1849 built a church. In 1860 members of Pastor Maschmedt's congregation (unhappy with him using the pulpit to preach about his theory that the earth was a four-cornered disc) re-formed a congregation under Pastor Meischel, calling their church Bethlehem Church. In 1871 the foundation stone for the present Bethlehem Lutheran Church was laid, and the church was opened the following year. The building, designed by James Cumming, cost 3,200 pounds. Like many early churches, the building of Bethlehem was assisted by donations from individuals outside the church congregation. |
