Description :

The Christian Endeavour youth movement was founded by the Rev. Francis E Clark in Maine, US in 1881. In April 1888 the first South Australian Christian Endeavour society was formed by the Rev. Silas Mead at Flinders Street Baptist Church. The movement was non-denominational, and members pledged to read the Bible daily, attend church every Sunday in addition to the weekly Christian Endeavour prayer meetings, and participate in active Christian service. By 1892, when the founder of the movement visited Adelaide, there were already 100 Christian Endeavour societies in South Australia. By 1912 there were 440 local societies with 12,000 members. The movement was enormously popular. In the first half of the 20th century, a high percentage of Australian children received a triple dose of religion every Sunday, attending church, Sunday School and Christian Endeavour.
