Description : |
The first Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Willochra, Gilbert White, expressed the opinion of many in the church who supported Australia's involvement in the First World War, and the duty of individuals to support the King and the (British) Empire. However, Australians were generally divided over the issue of conscription, and both conscription referendums - in 1916 and 1917 - were defeated. Church leaders saw the question not as political but rather as spiritual and moral. Anglican clergy felt the pressure of the First World War in many respects - not least in the role given to them by the Commonwealth government of delivering news of each soldier's death to the next of kin. |
