Description : |
Giles set out on his second expedition in August 1873, again seeking a route from the Overland Telegraph Line to Perth in Western Australia. His expedition was financed privately by Sir Ferdinand von Mueller and Victorian pastoralists. On 14 September he encountered the tracks of William Christie Gosse, a Government funded explorer, and who was meant to explore north of the MacDonnell Ranges. Giles believed that Gosse had encroached upon an area that he considered his by prior right of discovery. He had been here in 1872, at that time sighting Mount Olga at a distance. He continued with his description of Mount Olga (Kata Tjuta), which is a feature of the landscape that he considered almost baffled description. William Christie Gosse with a South Australian Goverment funded expedition left Alice Springs in April 1873. On 19 July he discovered Ayers Rock (Uluru) naming it after the Premier of South Australia. He also discovered and explored the Musgrave Ranges. |
