Giles staggered on for nine days after parting from Gibson, who was sent on ahead with their only horse. He was light headed with thirst and hunger, and wondered where the rescue party was. He had reached water on 30 April, and seen no indication that Gibson had reached this far. He was fortunate to find a small dying wallaby, newly cast from its mother's pouch and devoured it in its entirety. Finally he reached his depot at Fort McKellar on 1 May and discovered that Gibson had never reached it.

William Tietkens, his second in command, had been waiting anxiously for the return of Giles and Gibson who had gone ahead to reconnoitre a route, and had himself only just returned from where Giles had found water the day before. Tietkens had seen Giles' footprints but had mis-interpreted them.
