Description : |
Babbage describes where they found Coulthard's body. He was puzzled that Coulthard had not seen the Pera Waterhole which was clearly distinguished from the surrounding country by the gum trees nearby. Coulthard had apparently undressed and lay down in the shade of some bushes to find relief from the sun. He had scratched a message on his metal canteen which told the whole of his sad end: bleeding his horse to drink its blood, and the dreadful last moments and agonies of a man dying of thirst. Babbage and his men buried Coulthard where they found him on Pernatty Creek, which drains into the Pernatty Lagoon. Babbage returned Coulthard's watch and compass to his widow Marion. The canteen with its message was sent down the the Commissioner of Crown Lands. Marion Coulthard would later write to the Commissioner and ask for the canteen to be returned to her. This canteen was later donated to the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia. The reference to a map of Swinden's country found in Coulthard's pocket is to explorations made in 1857 by Charles Swinden, Murdoch Campbell and D Thompson. |
