Description : |
Cecil Madigan set out in 1939 to conduct a scientific exploration of the Simpson Desert. The expedition on 17 June was still at camp 8 and waiting for their gear to dry out after rain. Madigan recorded that the rain penetrated 15 inches into the sand. They also collected some rainwater in ground sheets to supplement the 232 gallons they had started out with. Madigan recorded the variety of birds seen. It was from this camp that the expedition made the first of their national broadcasts using a Traeger pedal set. The expedition consisted of Cecil Madigan, geologist and leader; RL Croker, botanist; HO Fletcher, biological collector; D Marshall, photographer; RA Simpson, wireless operator; A Hubbard, cook; Jack Bejah, head camel man, assisted by Nur Mahommed Moocha; and Andrew an Aboriginal man from Marree. The expedition went by truck to Andado station and from there proceeded to cross the desert using camels, supplied by Bejah Dervish, Jack Bejah's father. |
