Description : |
On 26 September 1836, William Light entered an inlet, explored it and decided it would make a fine harbour. It was sheltered from every wind and was some 3-4 fathoms (18-24 feet) deep. However, it was not the harbour described by Captain Jones and which he had been searching for. Light left to continue his search further up Gulf Saint Vincent, but found only low swampy ground and mangroves. He despatched one of the Rapid's boats to investigate the shore more closely, but did not believe Jones's harbour was here. A good harbour was essential for the new town that Light was commissioned to survey: he needed to find good land, a reliable water source and a good harbour all within close proximity to each other. There were already settlers on Kangaroo Island who had arrived in advance of his surveying team, and who anxiously and impatiently waited on his decision for a site for the first settlement. |
