Description :

Light landed on 3 October to explore a river mouth seen from the ship. Several of his men walked inland a little to examine the soil; they found it to be excellent and the country having many fresh water lagoons. Light was pleased too with the river, the Patawalonga, and thought it had great possibilities. On 5 October he sent two of his men to trace the river inland, and they found the water to be fresh some four miles inland.

Light considered that even if the lagoons dried up in the summer, wells could be dug and water would be found at no great depth. All together, this side of the gulf was looking more and more promising. He was obliged however, by his instructions from the Colonization Commissioners to search other parts of the South Australian coastline, including Encounter Bay and Port Lincoln.
