Description : |
Charles Sturt explored north towards the centre of Australia, and on the evening of 6 September 1845 the prospect ahead was of red sand-hills, and to the north-east of dry salt lagoons and samphire bushes. He had left his advance depot at Fort Grey on 15 August with four men, 10 horses and a cart and provisions for four months. He was attempting to cross some of the most inhospitable country in Australia. His hope of an inland sea, which had led him to take a whaleboat on his expedition, had faded. He now aspired to reach the centre of Australia, and there raise his flag. Accompanying Sturt on this attempt to penetrate the heart of Australia were Dr John Browne, Robert Flood, William Lewis and Joseph Cowley. At Fort Grey, John McDouall Stuart was in charge of the remainder of the party with directions to build a stockade and to plant a vegetable garden as provision against scurvy. He also left instructions for the boat to be painted in readiness, in case he found the long hoped for inland sea. |
