Description : |
Sturt and his men climbed one of the sand-hills to see the sand ridges extending in parallel lines as far as the horizon, and rising higher and higher as they advanced. All vegetation had disappeared now except for spinifex. With the sky overcast he was unable to take sights to determine his position either by the noon-day sun, or by the stars at night. Sturt began to consider the condition of his horses and men. The prospect ahead of the men was terrible. The horses had been without water and adequate food for days; the men were existing on damper and tea, with the occasional duck or pigeon. Now ahead loomed the huge spinifex covered dunes of the Simpson Desert. Camels would be used to cross it in 1936 and 1939; it is unlikely that horses even in the best of condition could have managed. Sturt did not know it but there were no water courses ahead of him. Would his usual prudence and care for the lives of his men win the day? |
