The instructions for cooking a camel continue. The foot is the most difficult part and requires prolonged attention. First the foot is charred and the hair removed. It is again returned to the fire until the sole can be removed with a tomahawk. The sole, of tough spongy horn is totally inedible and is discarded. The foot is then boiled for 36 hours before it can be rendered chewable. As all the camels were worn out and diseased they provided little nutrition. Water was also a major problem for the expedition and at this point, 19 September 1873 four men searched in different directions in hope of finding some. When Warburton returned from his expedition he was too ill to write up his diary for publication. This was done for him by a relative, Charles Eden. Warburton was able to tell Eden additional matters relating to the expedition and Eden always added these in parentheses. This account of how to cook a camel is one such item of additional information. |
