Description : |
Peter Egerton Warburton praises Charley, the expedition's Aboriginal guide for his efforts in finding water, without which the whole party would have perished of thirst. He also recorded that Charley had nearly missed the expedition altogether; Warburton had delayed as long as possible after Charley had left on his search for water, but had then decided he could wait no longer. At 9pm on 5 November 1873 he left his camp to go forward with his journey to the Oakover River. Charley's acute hearing had heard the camel bells and he had changed his return route to join up with the expedition. Charley had tracked some Aboriginal people to their water supply, in this way assuring Warburton's expedition of life. This was not the first time Charley would save the men's lives in this way. Warburton was not remiss in praising Charley, doing so not only in his book about the expedition, but at a public dinner back in Adelaide. |
