Description :

Town Hall, King William Street. This is a reproduction of a perspective drawing of the proposed Town Hall, before 1863. In 1858 the Adelaide city councillors agreed to advertise an architectural competition for the design of a Town Hall. Edmund Wright, who was then the Mayor of Adelaide won the competition but declined to accept the prize.

.

In 1861-62 the councillors decided to borrow 16,000 pounds to erect the Town Hall. Wright's plans were scrutinised and finally accepted, and in March 1863 excavations began and the foundation stone laid in May of that year.

However, the councillors sought to cheapen the construction of the town hall by having it rendered with a stucco finish rather than using grey freestone. A further loan of 4,000 pounds enabled the use of the freestone from a quarry at Tea Tree Gully.

In order to repay the money as quickly as possible the councillors also agreed that the Town Hall should be flanked by revenue-earning buildings to the north and the south. To the south there was a hotel which was to be leased out. This was the Prince Alfred Hotel and was built in 1869. To the north was an office building, Eagle Chambers, which was completed in 1876.
