Description :

The Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition had reached Skirmish Hill, Mount Gosse in the Tomkinson Range by 20 July 1891. David Lindsay discovered a tree blazed successively by William Christie Gosse in 1873, John Forrest in 1874 and William Whitfield Mills in 1882 and added his blaze to it as well. Instructions regarding the blazing of trees, or other marks indicating the expedition's movements had been very specifically laid down in the Expedition's Handbook of Instructions. The country was parched and there was little feed for the camels, and Lindsay considered the expedition too large for the country they were traversing, which was obviously suffering from an extended drought.

Larry Wells had returned from a flying trip in which he examined additional country to that covered by the main party. He gave a preliminary report of some favourable country and was in the process of writing up a full report. He reported finding evidence of Aboriginal people including their tracks and rock holes frequented by them. David Lindsay and Wells climbed Skirmish Hill of Mount Gosse and took a number of bearings to establish an accurate position before the expedition moved on.
