During a polio epidemic in Adelaide in 1937, brothers Edward and Donald Both developed a lightweight version of the 'iron lung' to assist polio sufferers with their breathing. The brothers' portable plywood style respirator allowed sufferers to be treated at home rather than having to be confined to hospital. |
