Description :

Records of the South Australian Chamber of Manufactures comprising minutes, letter books, subscription book, cash books, photographs, score sheets, architectural plan, painting of Ridley stripper, cartoon of H.E. Winterbottom, exhibits, including silk grown by Mrs Beetson 1866 and silver engraving by W.E. Ward, registers of awards and draft histories

John Ridley demonstrated his reaping machine in November 1843 and it won a prize from the Agricultural and Horticultural Society the following year. Some years later, John Wrathall Bull claimed that Ridley had seen his prototype for a reaping machine on display in September 1843 and had based his design on Bull's work. It is unlikely, however, that Ridley could have constructed an entirely new machine in just two months and thus he is generally credited with the invention.
