Description : |
Duke of York visits the Town Hall In July 1901, Adelaide city was lavishly decorated to welcome the Duke (later King George V) and Duchess of Cornwall and York who visited as part of a tour of the capital cities, following the opening of the first Federal Parliament in Melbourne in May. After opening Parliament the Duke and Duchess visited each state, presented medals, laid fountain stones and attended numerous receptions and events. Pomp and ceremony marked the visit of the Royal couple to Adelaide Town Hall, with crowds lining King William Street to view their cavalcade in a horse-drawn carriage. The British Government recognised the importance of demonstrating their close association with this new federation of states, which remained part of the British Empire. The ties of loyalty to the 'mother country' were evident in the contributions of these states to the South African (Boer) War, which had commenced before Federation in 1899 and continued to 1902. |
