Description :

Report of Howard Florey's tour of New Guinea lecturing Army medical officers on the use of penicillin. Florey would subsequently visit Australia.

In 1938 Ernst Chain, Florey's colleague at Oxford University, discovered one of Alexander Fleming's reports about penicillin. Florey, Chain and their team began experimentation with penicillin and successfully demonstrated its medicinal value, first in animals and then in human studies. When World War Two broke out, the team was keen to develop methods of mass-production of penicillin for the benefit of the armed forces.
