Description : |
David Unaipon was born at the Point McLeay Mission in 1872. His father, James Ngunaitponi (Unaipon) was the first adult Aboriginal Christian at the mission, and travelled the state, with other Aboriginal evangelists, spreading the gospel. From an early age David Unaipon displayed a sharp intelligence. Between 1909 and 1944 he patented many inventions, beginning with a modified shearing handpiece. He was an active Christian all his life, and was employed by the Aborigines' Friends' Association to travel and preach, gaining support for the Point McLeay Mission. He became an acknowledged spokesman for the Aboriginal people, although his views on land rights were not popular with governments of the time. David Unaipon died at Tailem Bend in 1967 aged 94. |
