Description : |
In 1883, at the age of just 37, George Wyndham Kennion became the second Anglican Bishop of Adelaide. Lucy Webb, the daughter of one of his priests recalled, 'His courtly manners and mode of speech were quite natural to him, though many thought him jammy, but he had always lived in the atmosphere of courts'. He left in 1894 to take up the prestigious English Bishopric of Bath and Wells, where he was said to have surprised residents of the ancient town by choosing to ride a bicycle rather than travel in his stately horse-drawn carriage. His successor was another bright young Englishman, John Reginald Harmer who was 38 when he became Bishop of Adelaide. |
