Howell Witt was a rugby-playing Welshman with a larger than life personality and unconventional views about church matters. From 1949 to 1954 he was the Chaplain at the Woomera Rocket Range. In 1957 Witt was appointed Rector of the new Anglican parish of Elizabeth. He became one of South Australia's best-known clergymen. In the 1950s 'teenagers' emerged as a separate social entity, and there was much discussion about methods of making religion relevant to these young adults. Witt encouraged young people in his parish to hold dances in the church, showing interest in the things that interested them. In 1965 Witt became Bishop of north-west Australia. |
